Traditional seating, plastic, hard, 90-degree angle (as seen in my classroom picture), is how we expect students to sit to learn, listen, and communicate. Slouching or foot-tapping, doodling, or pencil tapping is of course, similarly discouraged. Sitting still in an uncomfortable seat is boring. Children are not wired the same; enter neurodiversity. They have different amounts of stimulation, sensitivities, energies. They seek out ways to entertain themselves and reduce the task of sitting still. Today's learning and diverse students have necessitated alternative methods of sitting and learning in the classroom. There are many English Language Learner students who pass through my classrooms daily. They are eager to learn academic English and will be beyond elated to find seating that is both comfortable and fun and fits with my style of teaching. These innovative, more comfortable classrooms are still far and few between. However they are, in my opinion, a welcome alternative from sitting in a cold desk chair for every class, every day.
