Walk into any Kindergarten classroom, and you will find it alive with activity. Students are counting, drawing, cutting, gluing, exploring, wiggling, laughing, playing… Today, you will also find that students are reading, writing, posing and answering questions, solving math equations, working in small groups, engaging in project-based learning, and using conversation norms. Today’s Kindergarten is the new second grade! However, it is almost impossible to create a thriving, 21st Century learning environment while utilizing 1970s one-size-fits-all chairs and desks. Kindergarteners are not short 5th graders; they have their own special needs that go beyond those of the general elementary school population. I would like to add 6 adjustable, 42” round tables to my classroom. The round tables can be used as collective work spaces, not as individual desks, which promotes equity and cooperation. At a round table, all students have equal access shared materials. My current desks have cumbersome under-the-desk compartments for text books, which affect the heights of the chairs and can make it nearly impossible for a student to put his legs under the desk. The desks also make it arduous for students to collaborate with more than one partner at a time. At round tables, chairs can easily be added or removed to accommodate small group instruction. Kindergarten is the foundation of a child’s academic career, and it can set the tone for all future education. By providing students with tools as basic as tables and chairs that are scaled to their size and needs, you are sending the message that these children matter.
