My students face many challenges, many of those challenges environmental and circumstantial. My school is in a very low socioeconomic neighborhood. Many of my students are being raised in single-parent homes or by grandparents. Several students here have parents who are incarcerated, on drugs, unemployed, or who struggle with other hardships. Our school provides our students four meals a day as many of our students lack adequate access to nutrition. On an academic level, most of my students lack any kinds of books or literacy materials in the home. Many tell of not even having pencils or crayons with which to do work or projects. They come to school, often distracted by home situations, but for the 8 hours a day they spend here, they have not only access to learning, but encouragement. My students can all be successful, both in school and beyond, but access to more resources is critical. They love learning, but many only have access to resources and support during the school day.
