When it comes to our school garden, each student takes pride in taking part in creating and sustaining it. During the California heat, our plants, especially the young seedlings and baby plants struggle to fight the heat and sometimes they don't make it. In the past the students have used towels, plastic table covers, and even big post-it poster papers that we don't use anymore to shade the plants from being burned by the heat waves and the sun's direct light during peak hour (10am-2pm). However, they were ineffective and time-consuming.
Having the right tool in the garden plays a huge role in helping students understand sustainability and effectiveness of a thriving garden. They will see how these tools help them grow stronger and healthier plants for many seasons to come. They will be able to apply this knowledge and create their own version of them at home should they one day need them in their own sustainable home gardens. But the most important part of this lesson is to learn the right way to do it first and then they can get creative with building their own.
It would be an incredible gift to our students to be able to use these tools in the garden so they can learn how to create a thriving garden.
