My students are engaging in a year long study of voice and power. We spend the beginning of the year studying the relationship between our voices and our ability to advocate. We think about whose voices hold the most power and whose voices are heard most often and we ask why that is. We think about the ways that voices can be dangerous and even violent. In the second half of the year we focus on the ways that voices can be used to empower communities. I want my students to read and study Angels in America as a means of thinking about the power a voice can have in representing communities in their very own city. My students are then going to do advocacy projects. They're going to think about the best ways to use their own voices to speak out for their own communities (or the communities of their peers). We don't have the funds to order these texts through our school, but I believe in the importance of having this text and would love to have it on our shelves for years to come!
