We teach our kindergarteners to read. We explain the importance of connecting text to pictures and both to the real world. We use mini books that we print from online sources to make those connections. We want to engage our students and draw them into our studies by displaying the color and the real beauty of our world. Black and white booklets do not show the beauty and variety of the real world, nor do they always show subjects realistically. You can see the green of the plains or forests, the blues of the oceans or the multi colors of the coral under the sea. You can see the differences in the people of the world or where they come from. We want to expose our students at this young age to experiences that they do not always get where they live and go to school. It would be a great way to broaden our world.
