Our urban school is diverse in language, ethnicity, and experience. Our school is: 70% Latino, 10% African America, 10% Asian American, and 10% white. We serve a population that is classified as 99% low-income and a large English Learner population. Our students battle with the hardships of being socioeconomically disadvantaged. To counter this, I've turned to project based learning. We're producing Shakespeare plays based on ancient civilizations, creating short films and trailers, organizing USDA-compliant menus for the school cafeteria, and learning the language of computer programming through code.org. All of these activities require technology, to not only engage the students and produce a product, but also to promote 21st century skills that will be essential to these students' futures.
