A few years ago we were lucky enough to have Ashley Bryan visit our school. The joy of his poetry and art filled our halls and classrooms. Students who saw him in first grade still talk about him in fifth grade. I would love to give a new generation of students a chance to experience the joyful feeling that comes from his masterful use of language, story, and performance. My proposal is for the 144 students in first and second grade. Seeing the performance of "Beautiful Blackbird" and having the Theater Ensemble of Color come and do an in-class workshop will launch what will be a year-long celebration of the arts in their library classes. One of the ways our school seeks to celebrate diversity is by exposing students to art and literature that embroider a range of influences into the work. Ashley Bryan's picture books, poetry and stories are particularly close to our school's heart because he lives right here in Maine and incorporates the artistic influences of Africa and the Caribbean into his work. The Theater Ensemble of Color, a local theater group that strives to improve inclusion and strengthen culture in our community, will bring to life the spirit and art of this canonical piece of children's literature.
