As important as it is to build an inviting indoor classroom, I believe it is just as important to build an outdoor classroom. The playground at my PreK to 7th grade school is adequate. However, it could use some benches for children who may need to sit and rest. When my preschoolers are tired from running around, they take a seat on the ground. Often times, where they may find shade (this includes under the playground equipment). This can provide a safety hazard as other children continue to run around. Providing an adequate place for preschoolers to sit not only gives them a safe space, but also gives those who may suffer from asthma a chance to take a break. I firmly believe that rest is productive. So, taking time out of an active schedule to read, breath and relax is paramount.
