Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. In addition, it will provide the comfort that my nearly-adult students want just like the rest of us! Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given choices not just in their learning, but also in their seating and environment. Fidget toys also make a huge difference for my students, who often are surprised to realize that they love the same fidget and sensory toys as young kids.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less distracted/disruptive when they have a variety of comfortable spaces to work with group members or independently.
A group of my students helped pick these products after brainstorming ways to improve the classroom space. They engaged in the prioritization process (their initial lists were long!), and narrowed it down to a few items that they agreed would benefit everyone. They requested improved seating options; chairs for the floor, bar stools and tables, and tables at standing height. The furniture is all lightweight and easy to move around the classroom for various needs. Students also said that fidget toys are a nice way to take a quick break in the classroom, get some energy out, and reduce anxiety.
It has been fun to set up my first Donors Choose project alongside my students - they promise that they'll have more ideas to come.
