The alternative school I teach at has a diverse population of 100% at risk students. Students are often disengaged and disenchanted with school when they come here from the traditional schools. Some have fallen behind with their academics and attendance, or have experienced “falling through the cracks” at other schools. Our challenge is to keep students in school through innovative, engaging learning. The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) pilot program is an innovative program that emphasizes project-based learning, with strong ties to our local community and real world applications. I am the art teacher in a team of four other teachers in this block-scheduled program. Our goals for the program include an emphasis on technology, preparing them for the workplace by developing an academic and professional portfolio, and to work collaboratively with peers on project based learning.
