This year my classroom consists of twelve kindergarten and first-grade students who are five and six years old. We are one of four kindergarten through second-grade classes in an expeditionary learning style school in a rural town on the coast of Maine. Many of my students come from families who make their living from the ocean. More than 50% of our students qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch.
