Imagine starting off middle school missing out on the basics of reading. When students cannot access material in textbooks, state tests, or homework, it is difficult for them to invest further in their education in the crucial years of high school and college. Students need classes that meet their individual needs for reading so that each student can continue on a trajectory of growth that makes future success possible. The scholars of our school have been underserved for many years. The school is located in St. Louis and is in a low-income neighborhood. Our school is in its second year of "turnaround." This means that before the turnaround, the school was performing very low in reading, writing, math and science. My students are beating the odds but have a long way to go. The students come to class with a wealth of potential and a desire to learn and excel but historically have been overlooked in terms of resource allocation.
