Being a fifth grade teacher, my students have a wide range of needs in reading. It is key to have headphones available to all students to create reading opportunities. Many of my students' language acquisition are at the beginning to developing in the English language. It is key for my students to be able to hear the English spoken when reading books. Language skills are built on the foundation of hearing language to be able to speak it, read it, and write it. Students will be immersed in language when using their headphones to listen to stories, articles, and texts. People need to remember fifth graders are still children and need opportunities to listen to reading beyond the read alouds done by myself. It helps develop a students understanding of fluency in reading when listening to texts on their iPads. Another piece that is key about having these headphones is that our school assessment tool is dependent on headphones to test reading skills. Our classroom doesn't have any headphones so being able to assess 28 students will be impossible to do so. It is important to provide the right testing environment for all students to show what they know. There is nothing worse than coming to a test unprepared.
