The students we serve are at varying stages in their English language development. Some have lived in the United States for longer than others, and most of them come from homes where English is not the primary language. As they advance in their learning of English, many of our students are able to make a fairly quick transition into using conversational English by speaking with their peers and teachers. However, across the board, reading and writing remain the areas in which students require the most intervention. By adding a reading corner to our English as a Second Language intervention room, we hope to foster student-directed learning through independent reading and one-on-one reading intervention. The reading corner will have a bean bag chair, rug, string lights, and artificial vines to create a calm corner that encourages will provide a calm, safe, and inspiring space where students will learn to draw connections from a text and develop a positive attitude towards reading.
