Getting students to read can be difficult, but it is a critical skill that helps them gain skills used for many classes as well as in their everyday lives and as eventual professionals. Perhaps one of the reasons why reading is such a tiresome activity for many students is because they find it difficult and at times even impossible to connect with the themes, topic, and/or characters. When students are able to make personal connections with lessons and texts, learning is truly valuable and effective. Both Feed and The House of the Scorpion, are current and culturally relevant, making reading fun and exciting. My students would really benefit from reading and exploring the themes in these novels.
