We all know the importance of literature for a child’s development, but so are the unintended messages we send with the books we choose to read. I want my students to see and hear themselves, their families, and their community to build a strong home and school connection. I want them to see groups that might not be readily represented in their community to expose them to other people and cultures found out of their small community. With exposure to diversity comes respect for others and themselves. The books we are requesting include a collection of books in Spanish and representing Latino figures, since the majority of our students are Hispanic/Latino. We are also requesting books Caldecott Award winning books and a mix of fiction and non fiction books to represent more diversity, continue passion for reading with story favorites and also expose them to things outside the community. Hopefully it empowers them to have a voice of their own and to learn respect for others in order to listen to other people’s voices and struggles as well.
