Scholastic Action Magazine is a high interest, current event magazine that our kids love to read. The subscription also comes with an online version that allows us to differentiate our instruction by printing different levels of the same article. Each issue focuses on specific skills that offer our students the benefit of learning reading skills in context. For example, this month (April) there is an emphasis on summarizing, using text evidence, character motivation, comparing and contrasting, making inferences, and opinion writing. Our struggling readers in particular benefit from the use of these magazines because they are high interest, use nonfiction text features that they will encounter with their other texts, and because they are not "babyish" as many high interest lower level texts are, so our students aren't embarrassed to be seen with these magazines. Our students also benefit by learning about current events in our world that are presented in an interesting way giving them information about what is happening around the world. Our students look forward to the arrival of this magazine each month! Our district and building budgets have been cut for next year making the purchase of this magazine we love very difficult. We hope someone is able to help us keep this valuable resource.
