My students are born and raised in Bushwick, most of them coming from low-income families who live in the Public Housing buildings surrounding the school. They are eager to learn and thirsty for knowledge. Our school prides itself on being a school of the performing arts and our students sing, dance and act their way to the top. They read a book and imagine they are the characters, acting out scenes in their heads. They reveal these scenes to us through their writing and drawings, but it took a long time to get them to where they are at today. When entering our school, these students did not want to read, but thanks to the incorporation of the performing arts, our students are readers who will become leaders.
