My 6th grade science and language arts students are pushing forward in spite of economic and linguistic challenges. Approximately 84% come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and 50% are English Language Learners. Many are responsible for younger siblings or cousins, making after school educational activities or tutoring impossible. They come to school hungry and go home to empty apartments; still, they inspire me in their desire to make it to class and succeed. They are curious and enthusiastic, sometimes boisterous, sometimes shy. They deserve the opportunity to learn in a safe and engaging environment.

About my class
