After taking a close look at what my current classroom library looks like, I am sad to say that it does not represent the students in my classroom. I teach mostly Latino and Black students and all of my library books have White characters or animal characters. I would love to create a classroom library that shows the beautiful different skin tones represented in my classroom. It is more important than ever that my children are able to hear stories that will help them become independent, successful, and enthusiastic learners. Having these books will help me create compelling read-aloud videos for my students during this time of remote learning. At this age, making reading an enjoyable activity is essential and will help build lifelong readers. Having a read-aloud library filled with fun, diverse, educational titles recommended by teaching professionals will keep my students engaged. All of the books will be added to the school library collection once our school is reopened.
