Many of the students in my classrooms come from urban, low-income households. Basic needs are often in short supply. As an English teacher, I strive to instill the love of reading into my students. Although at times, texts are not of high interest, I work to incorporate interesting lessons or activities into their learning. As an ELA teacher in an urban district, many of my students are English Language Learners and in need of additional supports. Many of my classes are specifically geared toward students who struggle with reading comprehension and grade-level vocabulary. It is important that I work with the students to achieve their academic and personal goals so they can move on from high school and be successful in their futures.
