At our school the focus is on assuring that every scholar has every opportunity to succeed. When a student's family meets tragedy or unfortunate circumstance we work collectively to make sure it doesn't get in the way of their academic progress. Help with this closets means that if a student loses their backpack in a house fire, they will have another to replace it. It also means that if a parent is unable to purchase much needed but expensive art supplies due to unemployment, they will be provided.
Helping me build and stock the Ujima Closet means that food insecurity, housing displacement, and family conflicts including parental illness or unemployment won't stop a student from having the supplies they need to stay on track.
School social workers are mandated helpers in learning communities everywhere. Unfortunately, our ability to provide the concrete assistance students need when they need it is limited. Grants may cover one area but not another. Community organizations close frequently due to political climate. Young scholars don't understand it when you explain to them that they aren't 'poor enough' for help. They only know that they need help. The Ujima Closet would provide that support.
