It seems like a silly request to some. Pencils, Paper, dry erase boards, erasers---all necessary for my students to work in the classroom. You would think that students would have these on the first day and that parents would restock during the year as needed. But most of my students face hardships that others can only imagine. Homelessness, foster care, raising siblings, living with grandparents, violence...these are challenges to the student in the classroom. I try to create a safe space for them. Provide food when needed. Clothing if I can. One thing I know I can do is provide the very basics for a student in my class. Take the stress of not having a pencil--the embarrassment of having to constantly ask for a pencil. The ability to come to the table with paper at the ready to complete the daily tasks. Things many of us take for granted are lifelines to navigate middle school for my students The copy paper allows me to provide hard copies of assignments for the students who lack technology or internet at home. My students will write each day about what they read. They will work in groups with the whiteboards to challenge each other on their responses to discussion questions. Students want to succeed...but often lack some of the materials in order to be successful. Having their own supply pouch in my room gives them a sense of safety and security. They will know that no matter what, they have what they need at their fingertips in my classroom. ALL YEAR LONG. I am determined to give my students every chance at success.
