Hello! I am a first year art teacher and am concerned about my students. Our school is located in a neighborhood where many of our students have experienced a lot of financial hardship, especially during the pandemic. I want my students to feel excited to come back to school, and being a new teacher I feel that making my room as inviting as possible is the best way to invite them to connect with me and each other in my room. Some of the items from my list include: Sensory bands for chairs/stools - I love these bands because they help kids "fidget" with their feet without disrupting others. It keeps students actively engaged because they are able to move their legs and feet- a simple movement that for many can be very calming and help them stay focused. Set of stools- I use these as a tool for classroom management. I like to provide incentives for good behavior and one incentive I plan on doing is flexible seating. Decorations- keeps the room inviting and colorful-somewhere they are excited to come to instead of anxious or tense. Part of my classroom management as well! I have exhausted my budget and external resources to provide them with plenty of supplies, but I want my room to feel welcoming and safe for when they return. I have spent a lot of my own funds finding sensory lights, items, and decorations that will hopefully make them enjoy coming to my room. The items on this list are additional decorations, flexible seating furniture, or general office supplies my room is still lacking that I cannot afford to fund on my own. I would appreciate any help in making my room feel like home to my new students who need comfort.
