My classroom is split down the middle and shared with another special education teacher. The classroom is small and limits the amount of space my students have to spread out and work. This can be quite a hindrance with three grade levels. I continuously rotate small groups of students to focus in on their grade-level lessons while the rest of the students are expected to work independently.
In this project, my focus is to create a comfortable reading nook with books that reflect my students' own cultures and lives that they can use throughout the day. My students are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and students of color, both of which are under-represented in children's books. The library I am looking to build includes new books with characters of color and characters with a hearing loss. Additionally, I chose different types of flexible seating options the students could use around our small classroom to comfortably work independently.
In such a small space, comfort and high interest can mean the different between distraction and engagement. Please help me build a classroom environment my students will be eager to spread out and learn in!
