As an inner city school, many of the students come from low-income families and about a third of our class speaks a language other than English at home, including Chinese, Spanish, and Somali. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all share the same enthusiasm for school! Through my work as a literacy coach, our literacy block has undergone a drastic and much needed change as we moved from a scripted curriculum to a workshop model. My students no longer see themselves as just people who read and write but as actual readers and writers. They find the reading and writing they do worthwhile and genuinely look forward to the workshop period. Pop your head in at Writer's Workshop and you will see students busily crafting nonfiction and fiction books filled with rich illustrations, as well as students in deep conversation with one another about their books and the books they find inspiring.
