My students are determined; some of them take two (or more) buses to attend our school. We are a public charter and there are not stringent guidelines which govern student acceptance; we accept students based on a "lottery" system. We have a safe school with great teachers; this is why students travel so far to get here. My students persevere. For many of my students, finding the motivation to read and write on their own has proven a significant obstacle to their success. Even though they struggle with reading and writing (historically they're 2 grades behind), they make a valiant effort to do their best. In order for my students to be successful in their future endeavors, it is imperative that they read, speak, and write effectively and clearly. In order to help them succeed, it is my job to keeps students, their interests and needs, first in all things while fostering a love and passion for reading and writing.
