My students are curious 5th graders who are English language learners. Many have had limited life experiences since recently moving to this country. Every day they love to to use our classroom library to discover new things about the world. Yet, fiction books greatly outnumber the nonfiction books. Our science section is sparse. This project will enable my students to explore the various domains of science. Reading will be an opportunity to deepen their understanding of various scientific concepts and who knows where it will lead them? This project will increase access to the science curriculum and bolster academic language in various ways. We need books that are at or just above their reading level as well as books that accurately and clearly explain complicated science ideas and, better yet, make them wonder how the world works.
