As my students come through the door every morning, we greet each other with a special handshake or high five and a "Good morning!" My students take their seats and pull out books waiting for instruction to begin. Usually I am pulled aside by a student reminding me to test their reading level again because "they've been practicing and feel ready to move up." Every day my students are building their language skills as they navigate through their second year in an all English classroom. All but 4 of my students speak Spanish, with a majority of students who only speak Spanish at home, making school the only time my students are fully immersed in the English language. This creates an added barrier for students as they learn to read, identify, and separate the different letter and vowel sounds from both languages. As a result my students are working twice as hard just to get on grade level.
