My students are diverse academically, racially, economically, and socially. Some of the students are able to read 1st grade level books, while others are on grade level and about half are still learning their letters and sounds. The make up of my students consist of African Americans, Asian Americans, European Americans, Special education students, and language learners. Many of them often come to school hungry, without proper attire for the weather, and struggle to keep up academically. Regardless of their situations, most of my students come to school smiling and are ready to learn. Since September, they have shown such courage, spirit, and a willingness to learn. Our school is a K-5 school and part of large urban school district. The poverty rate at our school is high, and the student body also reflects that of my classroom - diverse academically, racially and economically. Many of the students are struggling academically and receiving free, or reduced lunch.
