Fresh Reads for Fall
Funded Oct 18, 2017Thank you so much for your support of my new classroom this year! We have been enjoying so many read alouds with the picture books provided by your generous donation. It's amazing how a class of rambunctious second graders can go from running around the gym, to being so engrossed in a story. I love looking at the carpet while I am reading, and seeing their eyes fixated on the pictures, their minds taking all the information in. Over a month ago we enjoyed the story Rough Face Girl, which was included in this project. The class till brought it up yesterday when they realized it had a lot in common with another book we were reading. I wish you could see they way their faces light up when they are making these connections. They don't forget the characters they meet in these books. It's as if they are making a life-long friend.
None of this could have been nearly as easy if it hadn't been for your generosity. Thank you, thank you, thank! ; )”

Funded Apr 23, 2017Thank you again for your generous donation to our classroom. We could not continue to reach for the stars without the help of our community. With your help, we now have all the books we will need to complete our reading units for this year, and we will be ready to start the year running in fall 2017. These titles are some of the most well loved books we've read this year, and now the class can enjoy them over and over. I can't wait to see the impact that comes from your gift. Thank you for benefiting third grade students for years to come.”

More Books to Keep Us Learning All Year
Funded Apr 25, 2017HI! We are now in week four of the 2017-2018 school year! Wow, time is flying by. My new class of second graders is really getting good use of the books you so graciously put your hard earned dollars toward. So far this year we have been focused on characters' actions and feelings. We have enjoyed the books No David! and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. We read these books over and over, and the kids seem to enjoy them more with every read. Some of them even chose these already well-loved books to read with their 8th grade reading buddies last week. ; ) Thank you for your continued support of my class, and for helping this year get off to a great start.”

Basic Needs vs. Budget Cuts
Funded Feb 12, 2017Thank you so much for your generous donations. I cannot express enough how grateful we are for the love and support of our community. With your donation, we were able to fix our copy machine, to ensure that we can continue to practice our skills for the remainder of the year. So much of our classwork involves making copies of texts or questions. This allows student to really interact with the text and do things such as highlight or underline important information. These skills are going to make them great life-long learners. Thank you for all that you do for our class, our level of success will go through the roof with your help. ; )”

Putting Students in Control
Funded Dec 6, 2016Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. Without you, we would not be achieving all that we do throughout the school year. As we know, public schools are having to make do with less and less each year. Thankfully, our students can now keep up with their same aged peers from more well-to-do areas, because they have the same materials to bring them to the top. Students LOVE looking up words in the dictionary with our new student dictionaries. Some of them even asked for their own dictionaries for Christmas this year! The subtraction kit has been a big hit and has improved subtraction skills for many of the students who needed that extra boost of help. The reproducible books have also helped us work on many skills, and the students love the stories inside them. We also just finished up our unit on area, and the area hands on materials came in very handy to understand this topic. Thank you for helping these students get the extra help they needed to reach their goals. We thank you every day.”

I Listen and I Learn!
Funded Sep 2, 2016Thank you so much for your support in helping my students learn my listening. We have gotten so much use out of our classroom set of headphones. Students have used them to listen along to stories, to follow directions in learning activities and of course to sometimes listen to music when the time is right. So many of our computer programs would not be usable without headphones. Without your generous support, we would not be the learners we are today. I am thankful for you every day when the students utilize these supplies. Thanks for your continued support.”

Technology in 2016-2017
Funded May 24, 2016Hello from the 2016-2017 school year! This year is already off to a great start. Class sizes in our school have increased greatly this year, which means we have had to provide more of the basic supplies and materials than we've had in the past. Thanks to your generous donation, we were able to seamlessly start the year continuing our one-to-one technology in the classroom program. Each student has an assigned classroom laptop for typing, researching and using educational programs. This year is off to a great start, and thanks to you, we are on our way to the top.”

Funded Mar 22, 2016Hi! Thank you so much for your thoughtful donation to our classroom for our fraction materials. Now that we are nearing the end of the school year, and working on our end of year testing, we are seeing the real results of the materials! Fractions are often a hard concept to grasp, since it is very visually oriented. These fraction materials have been such helpful tools. The students love them so much, they even ask to use them during recess time! If that's not a sign of successful learning tools, I don't know what is. Thank you again for your generosity.”

Third Grade Writing Workshop Field Trip to Open Books
Funded Nov 11, 2015I am happy to report that our field trip to Open Books was such an overwhelming success! The students had a fabulous time learning how to use creative adjectives to describe the setting in their writing. They focused on describing their dream bedrooms, which were full of everything from an automatic Metra Train driving around the ceiling, to a tree that contains shelves for toys and books and even a special bird classification table!
The students had their work published into two anthologies of writing and they feel so accomplished! In the workshops, the students also had a chance to share their work with the class and wear the famous Open Books pencil costume. They really enjoyed hearing each others' stories and were so proud of themselves, and of one another.
After the workshop the students each had a chance to pick a book from the Open Books store. They each made such great selections, ranging from Ramona and Her Mother to the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records!
It was such a memorable experience for the class, and I hope to make this a yearly field trip. Thank you so much, we would not have had a chance to experience this workshop without your generous help.”
