We are offering the first of what will be four engineering courses in our new STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) small learning community. Boys and girls, aged 14-17, have enrolled in the course because of their interest in science and math. These students attend a public high school in an urban environment; more than 55% of our students are low income, and the majority are students of color representing many ethnic groups. By offering our students this hands-on, project-based engineering curriculum, we will capture their interest and curiosity and encourage them to take their education seriously. Such a program helps students see the applicability of their studies, entices them to attend school more regularly, and convinces many to plan for college and a career beyond. The curriculum is accessible to a wide range of students -- from under-performing to gifted.
