The use of sensory and motor materials is a daily activity in my classroom. My students love to utilize these resources when they are feeling frustrated or need sensory stimulation. I currently have a few materials to help meet my students' needs in these areas; however, I have gotten to know my students much better and have been able to determine what materials I can use to better meet their needs. My goal for the coming school year is to create a time-in area where my students can go when they are feeling big emotions or need a break. I want to create a space in my classroom that allows my students to work on more functional skills and coping techniques. The magnetic learning letters will serve as a simple activity to redirect my students when they become frustrated with a more difficult task. The sensory tubes, timers, discs, and toy will be used as part of a time-in toolkit for when students need sensory stimulation as part of their time-in. I will utilize the time-in area and accompanying materials to help my students better understand their own emotions and how to more appropriately cope with them. With this explicit instruction, I hope my students will be able to learn new coping techniques and functional skills that will allow them to participate more with their peers in regular education.
