With texts like The Hobbit and The Lightning Thief, some students become disengaged and lose interest in reading the novels largely in part because of their literacy skill level. Students will miss chances to make meaning from the text so by offering an alternative version of the text with visuals the text becomes more accessible to students. This is part of the goal for special education, equitable access to educational materials. Using diverse comics and graphic novels in the classroom, students can practice autonomy by making their own selections for reading in small group or with a friend. The ultimate goal is to promote reading and literacy in a way that is fun and accessible to students. This includes more contemporary fiction texts as students have unlimited access to non-fiction materials in their educational experiences. Incorporating material that is of interest to students may be able to help accomplish the goal of literacy development.
