Over 50% of my high school students are Latino, and many are English Language Learners, meaning they are still acquiring the necessary language skills to speak and perform in an academic setting. Most live fairly far from school, some even walking several miles because they can't afford money for the public transportation. They are surrounded by a culture of gangs and drug dealers, so school has become a safe haven and one a place they enjoy to be. Our school is trying hard to make the changes necessary for our students to succeed, but this road is long and hard. We have an incredibly supportive administration who cares deeply about this community and are a part of it. The students want to learn and when teachers show they care and invest in them, they perform. The problem is their are too few of us teachers and the resources to continue are not always available. Our state standards exam scores are low across the board, especially in the sciences. These students need to be invested!
