To give students and families more choice in the public domain, my school is opening a Montessori unit. As I am transitioning from a traditional classroom to Montessori, I am receiving training that is preparing me for a hands-on learning environment. This training is teaching me the importance of having an organized environment full of objects to aid student learning. By creating a hands-on experience for my students, they will be able to absorb more information through the use of concrete materials. The dining table set will provide a miniature environment by which students will begin to learn the function of words such as nouns, articles, pronouns, etc. The miniature figurines will function much in the same manner; however, they will also lend themselves to lessons in Science. The cabinet is necessary for organizing miniature objects in alphabetical order, so the students can begin to associate them by letter/name and access them easily. I decided to take on this new adventure in Montessori because I truly believe it will reach students who do not benefit from the traditional classroom setting. If I can prove this to be true through the success of my own students, it is my hope that more public schools will find creative solutions to meeting the needs of every child.
