Learning to read can be frustrating, especially for those who have continually been told that they are reading below grade level. Sadly, that is the reality for the majority of my 4th and 5th grade special education students. I am working hard to change this mindset and focus on their improvements. Finding books that my students are interested in has been the key to increase their reading levels. With the books that I have, I have been able to encourage an increase of about 2 grade levels per student in one school year. The problem is, many books at their levels (2-3 years below their peers) seem like "baby books" to their classmates, so they don't want to read them outside of my room. The books I have chosen for this project are of high interest, but also those that they can read mostly independently, and that will be desired by their peers as well.
