For the final unit of the year the students will be learning about Romanticism in literature with a focus in gothic. It's always a fun unit for them because gothic literature, contrary to what it may seem, is about mysterious and supernatural events. Students love mystery! After an introduction with Sleepy Hollow and Edgar Allan Poe, we will dive right into the mystery presented by Shirley Jackson in "We Have Always Lived in the Castle". Through this novel we will learn about character development, sequence of events, elements of romanticism and of course the importance of a reliable narrator. This story is intriguing from beginning to end and as any educator knows, it's important to keep the students' interests. They will love this story and we'll have so much fun in our activities with it.
