Our classroom focus is math & science. We currently have desks with attached chairs, which can make collaboration and group work quite challenging. When asking my kids what would make our room feel safe and like a second home, they stated comfy seating. We have brainstormed some ideas we would like to have. Some of the items requested are to help our flexible seating be organized as well.
Flexible seating is a way for students to feel comfortable in the classroom, and it builds collaboration.
My students have requested a whiteboard table to work at with me. Two of their favorite things are using expo markers and sitting with the teacher. They LOVE writing on desks, but it ruins the desks after a while. My students also requested a futon, so they can sit at a coffee table and work like they do at home. Other students wanted to lounge in bean bag chairs while using clipboards to complete their work. Another reason for bean bags is that they are easily movable to where they can see the board. Students also need a place to keep their work safe & a place where their work can be returned without a hassle.
Having a classroom where students have choice in their learning and feel safe is one of my priorities as a teacher. I want my students to have a say in how our classroom looks and feels, which is why I brainstormed with them before creating this project. My students come from different backgrounds and some are less fortunate than others. For those students, it is especially important to create a fun space for them to relax and learn.
