The time that we spend reading in our classroom is a time for all students to spend with a book that they choose, and a story and author they like. It also creates the opportunity for students to share and discuss their favorite books together. My students need more variety in the books that are available to them, and a more inviting space in which to read. By getting more books, including graphic novels and books in languages other than English, my students will be able to discover more stories to fall in love with, and more opportunities for discussion. They also need a break from the harsh florescent lighting that they spend their school days in, and a change in the lighting can create and immensely calmer classroom environment, perfect for quiet reading time.
