I help my students succeed in school and in life by providing them with a safe space and by teaching them essential life-skills they need. When students are dealing with trauma, as most children in poverty do, they are not able to focus on math.
With these items, I will be able to have flexible seating to allow my students to work in groups. The sand art, stress ball and water beads provide tactile sensory toys to help students with self-regulation.
We will use the rock paints to create positive messages on rocks that I have collected at the beach. The students can carry the rocks, keep them in their pocket for a worry stone, or pass to students who need a pick-me-up. I will use the Julia Cooke books for my classroom lessons on social-issues.
My students seek safety and love throughout the day. With a warm, inviting office that contains the necessary items, I can teach them to regulate their emotions. I can work with groups on conflict resolution and trust. When students feel loved and safe they can be receptive to their academic lessons and achieve their potential.
