COVID has definitely caused many of my students to keep their emotions bottled up inside. Using picture books to introduce topics and connections to the characters help my students start opening up about their own experiences and emotions. They can see that they are not alone. Using literature to build a growth mindset and healthy social emotional well-being in my students will prepare them to be successful in the future. I have seen how using children's literature can help heal, encourage, and empower my students. Sometimes connecting to a fictional character is safer for them than opening up to humans. However, it opens the door for me to have great conversations with my students, which in turn, gives me the information I need to provide the appropriate support they need.
