These high-quality books will provide the opportunity for my Kinders to think deeply about the story they are hearing. Help these young learners to develop critical thinking skills while wondering and exploring ideas being brought to life by these wonderful stories! Close reading is a way for children to "uncover layers of meaning that lead to deep comprehension” (Nancy Boyles, Educational Leadership). Yes, this can happen in Kindergarten! The ideas and "wonderings" that our youngest students discuss are simply amazing, but it is only possible if we have quality literature in our classroom. These books will be read and discussed, in depth, by students in my classroom. We will focus on one book every week looking at essential questions, comprehension, vocabulary, story elements, and more. Children will have a chance to discuss, for example: "Why did this character make that choice?" and "What makes you think that?" This also encourages strong conversational and cooperative learning skills.
