My students are a diverse group of learners who come from various places around the world. Many of them are newcomers who are in the country for a few weeks, or even a few days, before they are placed in my classroom and expected to learn- in a language they don't know and in an environment they aren't familiar with. Despite the challenges of acclimating to a different culture, being separated from a home country, being placed in a classroom of students with whom they can't communicate, and having little to no schooling experience or previous educational background- my students want to be in school. They look forward to having the consistency of the classroom and the excitement of being exposed to new things. For many of them, school becomes a safe haven from their day to day lives. It is my goal to make them feel as comfortable, safe and loved as possible in the short period of time that I have them. I want them to be as excited about learning as I am about teaching them.
