Service-learning refers to learning that actively involves students and which also benefits others and the community, while also advancing the goals of a given curriculum. In more simple terms: students learn educational standards through tackling real-life problems in their community! At my school, 5th grade students were asked, by their homeroom teacher, to think of an issue among their school, community, or nation, that they felt passionate about. After self-reflection and discussion, the group of students I work with decided they wanted to help animals around our city. We had many productive discussions about animal cruelty, animal testing, homeless animals, and adopting vs. shopping for a pet. Empathy is so important for students because it helps them understand and work with others (yes, even animals!). From our discussions, I can already tell this group of young individuals care about the safety and well-being of animals. With the materials we plan to use for this project, we would get to make the following items to take to a local animal shelter: 1. Homemade blankets and beds 2. Homemade dog treats 3. Homemade catnip 4. Homemade "adopt me" bandanas
