My 5th grade students are full of life and a thirst for learning despite all the challenges that get in the way of their education. Their school is located in a low-income DC community, and over 95% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Due to the current frozen budget, teachers need to buy all of their classroom materials themselves. I pull my students out of 30-student classrooms to teach remedial literacy and English language skills, but because of lack of space and construction, we often have to move to offices, storage rooms, hallways, or wherever else we can find space. Most of these spaces do not have classroom materials, not even a white board!
