Greer Elementary, located in Charlottesville, VA, is the most diverse public elementary school in Albemarle County. My classroom is ever-changing, as I work with the students learning English. I work with students and teachers alike to incorporate social and academic opportunities that honor diversity, multicultural learning and language development. We strive to create a school where ALL of our students feel safe and welcome and are encouraged to share and learn along-side their English-speaking peers. In our school of over 600 students, 40% are English Language Learners. They speak 23 languages, come from 33 countries, and 5 continents. We welcome many of the young refugees coming through the International Rescue Committee in Charlottesville, children of visiting scholars at UVA and Dreamers alike. While 80% of our students qualify for free & reduced lunch, we strive to provide rich learning opportunities for all.
