Imagine being six years old and it's time to build community on the carpet with your peers and someone is sitting on your spot! Despite having a seating schedule posted clearly and the teacher has reminded everyone where they sit on the carpet, there is usually a daily squabble about "someone is sitting on my spot!" As a teacher who taught kindergarten with a "rainbow rug" where every student had a square assigned to them for seven years, moving to first grade without a "rainbow rug" has been a challenge. The "rainbow rug" has helped me manage my young students with spatial awareness and boundaries. Students feel more safe, secure, and confident knowing they have an assigned seat to go to. Students know who their "pair-share" partners are and can quickly make a circle around the rug when we have community sharing. I would really like to have a "rainbow rug" in my first grade classroom to create a more peaceful and confident learning climate. I will be able to assign easier small groups, students will be able to work within their own space, and students will feel more independent.
