Adults need a break when working; more so for children with Autism who need more sensory breaks to help them function all in a day's work. Having a sensory area in our classroom will greatly help my students ease the overwhelming sensory input they unwillingly absorb everyday. A sensory area will give my students a safe place to learn how to identify their emotions and manage their reactions to it. Noise-cancelling headphones will help my students balance out the loud noises we normally hear as audible. Flexible seating such as calming seat cushions, chair bands and vibrating seating mats will help them control their motor impulses during table-top activities and carpet time. Liquid floor tiles and sensory kits are tools to help them relax their visual and tactile needs.
By donating to this project, you will not only improve my students' learning but you will also fill in the gaps between their sensory deficiencies and socio-emotional needs. Having a sensory area in our classroom will teach my students how to minimize their own stress wiggles and maximize their own learning.
As my students learn how to regulate their emotions and find the right sensory balance, I am pretty sure that there will be a notice of significant improvement in their attitude, attention and learning. Help us make our sensory area come alive.
